Vocalist, Marianne Matheny-Katz presents “Rebirth of the Cool” at The O’Callaghan Annapolis Hotel in a concert hosted by Annapolis impresario Elana Byrd. One of Baltimore’s most accomplished singers, Matheny-Katz has performed in the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, New Jersey Jazz Festival, Patterson Park concerts, Artscape, Blues Alley, the Eubie Blake Center, Germano’s, The Carlyle Club and many other venues.  Her 2014 CD Somewhere in Paradise received significant national airplay and critical praise. She is co-founder of Jazzway 6004, named by DownBeat as one of the finest house concert venues in the country.

Rebirth of the Cool!

1959 was arguably the most creative year in all of jazz history and it ushered in an era of cool jazz through the 1960’s, with many contributions during that period considered to be jazz classics. Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman and Dave Brubeck all released highly influential jazz albums in 1959 and in the period following that year. These artists, along with others, including Horace Silver, Cannonball Adderley, Dizzy Gillespie, and Antônio Carlos Jobim dominated the jazz sound of this period. In addition, jazz infused pop from composers like Burt Bacharach entered the scene with tunes that would become jazz standards of the future. The program explores the contributions of these artists and music of this period of jazz.

For more information about the jazz series call Ms. Byrd at 410-269-0777.
